One of the most remote of all the proposed wilderness areas, Cheat Mountain contains the state’s largest unbroken stand of Red Spruce. Special features of the area include the High Falls of the Cheat which is a major waterfall and favorite destination for hikers and excursion train visitors. The sound of the river below, in one of its steepest, most boulder-strewn stretches, adds to the visitor’s experience along the Shavers Fork of Cheat, the highest river of its size in the eastern U.S.
