America's Wilderness turns 45

Morgantown, W.Va. —Tomorrow marks the 45th anniversary of a conservation landmark — the Wilderness Act.  Signed into law on September 3, 1964 by President Lyndon Johnson, this historic legislation has been used by West Virginians to guarantee that future generations will be able to use and enjoy our majestic wilderness areas.

How The Wildlands Were Protected: The Wilderness Act At 45

Charleston, W.Va. - Thursday is the 45th anniversary of the signing of the Wilderness Act, a law that protects more than 100 million acres of pristine American wild lands. Ed Zahniser, who works for the National Park Service, is the youngest of four children of the late Howard Zahniser, an environmental activist at mid-century and the principal author of the legislation. Byrd joins efforts to commemorate 45th Anniversary of Wilderness Act

Washington, D.C. - Senator Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., recently joined in cosponsoring legislation that would commemorate the signing of federal legislation that has provided protections for public lands and wilderness areas throughout the United States.

Forest Service saws away at managing 37,000 new acres of protected W.Va. land

Cowen, W.Va. -- When a tree fell across Little Fork Trail in the Monongahela National Forest in February, Diane Artale and Nathan Welch could have cleared it away with chain saws. But as of March 30, when an act granting wilderness protection to 37,000 acres of remote Monongahela National Forest land was signed into law by President Obama, hand tools must be used to do maintenance work along the deep-woods footpath.

Wild Mon Act passed by Congress

March 25, 2009
Washington, D.C. - Roughly 37,000 acres of West Virginia's Monongahela National Forest will now be permanently protected as Wilderness, after the House of Representatives passed the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act of 2009.
